Artefact drawings & photos from the Mary Rose

The wreck of the Mary Rose that sank in the Solent off Portsmouth in 1545, is a wonderful treasure chest of artefact dating. Her remains are effectively a time-capsule. A snapshot of life in the middle of the 16th century.

Shrivenham Heritage Society member Neil Maw was involved in the early excavaions of the Mary Rose and whilst investigating some buckles that had been found in the Shrivenham district, he was assisted in dating them by similar artefacts that had come from the Mary Rose. The drawings he was given he has now donated to the heritage society for others to use.

The Mary Rose was successfully raised in 1982 and there is now an amazing display of her hull and thousands of artefacts at Portsmouth. Well worth a visit.
