In 1871 a need was established for an Elementary School in Longcot and what was probably an infant school in Fernham. Between 1871 and 1911 numerous forms, letters and notes were written between the staff of the Education Department and school managers, vicars, residents and head teachers. They provide an interesting insight into establishing and running a village school.
There is correspondence concerning schools in both Longcot village and the hamlet of Fernham. In 1871 they were regarded as one District.
