3 X 18th century Lease & Release transactions of the Cox family of Bourton

These transactions are from the collection, Bourton House papers, (BHP) and take the form of a typical Lease & Release of the early 18th century

The first is dated 15th & 16th May 1702 and is between Sir Charles Hedges of Compton Bassett, Wilts and Dame Eleanor his wife on the one part; and John Cox the younger of Bourton, Yeoman, on the other part. It's a remarkable transaction mainly for the amount of money involved for the size of the land. The price was £1800 paid by John Cox for, 'All those several parcels of land, meadow and pasture, containing 27 acres lying and being in Upper Bourton, late in the possession of Sir Charles Hedges.' It would be interesting to discover the exact location of the land involved and perhaps discover why it was worth so much.

The second is dated 14th & 15th June 1716 and was between Mark Stuart Pleydell Esq on the one part; and Thomas Cox of Bourton, Yeoman, on other part. The payment was £363 made by Thomas Cox for, 'All that inclosed ground of pasture and arable now divided into two parts, commonly called or known by the name of Henleaze containing 22 acres.'

The third transaction is dated the 26th and the 28th March 1720 and is between Thomas Hinton of the Parish of St Paul's Covent Garden, Middlesex, (today London), Linnen Draper, the eldest son and heir of Giles Hinton, late of the same Parish, deceased, on the body of Elizabeth his wife, also deceased, and the son and heir of Thomas Hinton, late of Bourton Esq, deceased, and John New of Nether Bourton, Yeoman on the one part; and Thomas Cox of Nether Bourton, Gent, on the other part. It involves a number of parcels of land in the Parish of Bourton and there is a long list of field names, sizes and where they are located in comparison to other land holders. The price that Thomas Cox paid was  £1521.

Also in this listing is a copy of John Cox's Will dated 9th January 1720. Mentioned is his brother Thomas of Bourton, his sister Catherine Jenner, the wife of Robert Jenner.

Also a Release letter signed by Lucy Hinton acknowledging receipt of £133.6.8 in lieu of any claim on lands left by her father's Will. (High resolution copy available on request)
