Swan's Nest

The purpose of this listing is to record the name of a locale in Shrivenham called Swan's Nest. In the Manor Court Records for Shrivenham held at the Berkshire County Archives is mention of a dispute that ocurred in 1539, whereby several people were fishing at a place called Swan's Nest and was described at the enquiry as a place which, for time out of mind had been common water. In one particular incident it was alleged that Thomas Warnford physically attacked Thomas Essex there.

The Ordnance Survey maps still show the name which is on the River Cole (anciently known as The Lenta) just to the east of Friars Farm on the road between Highworth and Shrivenham. Please see photos.
