Bourton Wharf Carvings

This listing concerns a newspaper article that appeared in the Swindon Advertiser on 23 March 1972. It asks the readers for information on the stone carvings that can be seen at Bourton Wharf alongside the A420.

A later article dated 27 March 1972, explains what they are and how they came about.

The main carving referred to was removed from the wharf when the Shrivenham By-Pass was built in 1983, and placed in Bourton church.

In 2018, by chance when Ingrid Austin from Bourton visited the Heritage Centre at Shrivenham, the mystery of what happened to some of the other carvings was solved. There were several of them in her garden and probably had been since 1983.
