This listing might appear at first glance to be peculiar, in that one would assume that the listed monument known as the Village Cross, belongs to the Village. But this was not the case, when in fact, up until 2005, the Cross and the Green upon which it stood, belonged to the Manor of Cleycourt. The Lord of the Manor was listed as John Arkell (of the family that is Arkell's Brewery), and this title had since been sold to Daniel Miles, of Gallowstree Common in Oxfordshire.
Investigations were carried out by Bourton residents John Bean and Derek Austin, who managed to purchase the land and monument, which is now leased to Bourton Parish Council. This listing contains copies of the key documents that explain how the purchase was carried out.
We are gratfeul to John Bean of Bourton for allowing Shrivenham Heritage Society to scan the documents.
