These are copies of map sections covering the whole of Berkshire in 1761 and were donated to us by Alan Watkins of the Swan Inn at Radcot. John Rocque was a Cartographer to the government. The original scale is 2 inches to 1 mile. They are particularly useful for the researcher where layouts of villages are more decipherble in the middle of the 18th century. The sections have been scanned in high resolution and are stored in the SHS Digital Vault. Copies are available upon request.
The map sections cover as follows:
A Shrivenham, Coleshill, Radcot, Highworth
B Hinksey, Cumnor, Part of Oxford
C Wantage, Childrey, Wargrave
D Binfield, Warfield, Wargrave
E Reading, Tilehurst
F Hermitage, Yattendon, Thatcham
G Hungerford, Wickham, Kintbury
H A copy encapsulated in plastic of Shrivenham section (poor quality)
