Longcot School Minutes from the School Managers' Committee

Longcot School Minutes from the School Managers' Committee

A written entry in 1897 is the first record that we have from the School Manager’s Committee. The running of the school was aided by a committee of Managers and Subscribers. As a Church of England school the incumbent Vicar was Chairman of the committee. In the first entry this is Reverend Robert Thompson. The school opened in 1874 but earlier pages of the record are missing.

Meetings took place quarterly, opening with prayer and the reading and approval of minutes from the previous meeting. Many issues were addressed these included finances, building repairs and appointment of new teachers. Discussions on the behaviour of a certain headmaster and possible closure of the school make interesting reading.

In 1945 the school building was condemned and the school was threatened with closure. For over 20 years the problem was discussed and eventually in 1969 a new school opened in the village. To read the story please click HERE
