History of Schooling in Longcott

There has been a school in Longcott for over 300 years. The first in 1717 was a charity school for 12 boys. The second in 1847 was a Dame School for girls.

The Education Act passed in 1870 required all children from the age of five to 12 years to attend school. In Longcot a school for boys and girls was built and opened in 1874 with over 100 children on the register. In 1969 the condemned building was replaced by a modern, open plan school.  This building underwent a major refurbishment in 2000, with a new classroom and extensions to other rooms it is still in use today.
