This listing is primarily to record the existence of what was known as 'Acorn Cottages.' Within the documents known as the Bourton House papers (BHP) there are several references to them and their location was very close to the junction of the Canal, Railway and River, collectively known as Acorn Bridge, (historically Hackern). We have reference to them that quotes a deed citing the Wilts & Berks Canal Co and we can only assume at the moment, that the cottages were built by them to house workers for maintenance of the canal. All trace of the cottages would have been obliterated when the section of the main road was dualled to go through both bridge arches.
