Lecture on Chemistry. On Thursday evening week, at the Shrivenham Reading–rooms, a most interesting and instructive lecture was delivered by Mr W.A. Fairthorn, of this village, the subject being, ‘The Elemental Chemistry of the Gases and Carbon.’ The lecturer, who was surrounded by a highly respectable and crowded audience, commenced by observing that as we look around us, we find in nature a great variety of objects.

The lecturer, throughout the address, riveted the attention of the whole audience for an hour and a quarter, during which, and at the close, he was loudly applauded. A vote of thanks was proposed, and unanimously carried, for Mr Fairthorne’s kindness in voluntarily coming forward and delivering such an able lecture; and we sincerely hope, at some not far distant period, we shall again experience a similar treat from that gentleman.

Note: Where might the, 'Reading-rooms' have been in Shrivenham in 1856 ? Any suggestions would be welcome.
