Bourton Wharf on the Wilts & Berks Canal

The property located just to the north of the village of Bourton near Shrivenham, might appear to be in a peculiar position. But when explained that it is sighted on the junction of the busy A420 and what was the Wilts & Berks Canal, it is of no surprise to learn that it's called Bourton Wharf. This listing is a collection of information that is known so far of it's history.

In the collection known as the Bourton House papers (BHP) there are documents that deal with the Wilts & berks Canal Company and Cyril Butler the owner of the Bourton Estate. There are numerous letters between Cyril and the compaany, which culminates with a deal whereby cyril purchases the old wharf, wharf house, and numerous small pieces of land. There is a draft Indenture and an original sale agreement and a neatly drawn plan. There is also a small bundle of correspondence with the Gt Western Railway company over a blocked culvert mistaken for a problem with the Canal.
