Laying the Foundation Stone at Bourton Church
Devizes and Wiltshire Gazette Thursday 11 August 1859
On Monday last, the foundation stone of a new church, to be dedicated to St James, was Laid by Lady Barrington, at Bourton, in the parish of Shrivenham, in the presence of Lord Barrington, the Honourable Miss Barrington, and a large concourse of persons. The site upon which the church is to be erected, was given by Thomas Tucker Esquire who has also presented a handsome donation towards the building fund; and at the close of the ceremony, on Monday afternoon, the same liberal gentleman entertained the whole of the school children of the village with an abundant supply of tea and cake; whilst, later in the evening, all the workmen employed upon the building were provided with a good and substantial supper at the Barrington Arms in, at Shrivenham. The day, in fact, was made a day of joy and happiness among all classes, and was one which will not readily be forgotten by the inhabitants of the pleasant and much improved little village of Bourton.
